But many times at least for the companies that I have worked (global 500s) internal interviewing process can be shadier than external. For many reasons including but not limited to
1. many HM already have a mind to hire an external candidate (known or unknown)
2. many HM already have chosen a candidate before the requisition is even open
3. current managers throw salt into the process to keep their good employer from moving to another department

Numbers 1 & 2 happen A LOT. Number 3 happened to me once.
Sometimes your current boss just considers it a nuisance that she has to replace you. Face it, it can be difficult. In my case, I was in a skilled trade but my duties were highly specialized. It was going to take a year to get someone fully up to speed.
The engineering dept. needed someone now, and there was just NO WAY that we could swing a promotion without it hurting our little division.
Sometimes we get pigeon - holed by accident.
For 1 & 2,
There could be some very valid reasons why the hiring manager would go with one of these options. For case #1, it could be a direct line supervisory role. That can be hard for a department to realize this change. Animosity, jealousy, etc. can rear its ugly head.
Face it, some folks just can't handle the fact that their work buddy for eight years is now their boss. And your buddy that got the promotion might have a hard time transitioning from producer to manager. Takes some maturity on both sides for a smooth transition.
No. 2 is just plain reality.
My first big promotion was done with a tap on my shoulder. Basically, I was told by a manager that a job posting was going to happen in a week and that I should apply for it.
I was the only one interviewed.
