Simply amazed - As I am an Executive Administrative Assistant trying to relocate as well. But I seem to be having a hard time lining up employment. Surprised that they paid for your flight to Portland. Many companies will tell you in a heartbeat that we are a "dime a dozen" unfortunately. As someone said in an earlier post, the stars just seemed to be aligned for you regarding this position. Not gonna lie...very envious of your good fortune landing out-of-state employment because its very hard right now for the rest of us looking to relocate. Psichick, what would you say was your "trick" for getting noticed? Do you feel you had an awesome cover letter or that your resume is great? I know you said the recruiter turned down the job you applied for but noticed you for another position...all your stars were in alignment!! I'm excited for you...it inspires me to get my resume going because I, too, want to relocate but need that job first before I go.
I had one out-of-state interview 3 years ago, just before I got my current job, and I didn't get it. There were many factors so it's hard to know why precisely they didn't choose me, but I've always said a major part was that I wasn't in town already. I'm anxious to know your outcome and wish you the best of luck. From all your posts, I think you'll do great.
Well, at least I found out why they're really interested in me. They really liked that I have worked for multiple bosses for the most of that time. That was important to them. Also, they needed someone who did heavy calendaring and travel. Although I don't do a ton of travel, I do it at least once a month for someone (and I did it on my own, they have a travel agency). The calendaring is not a big deal. Once I get a feel for their preferences, then it's just the art of negotiating with other admins to find times.
I think that my background fit what they were looking for to a T. The amount of work experience I had, they liked. The jack-of-all-trades/multitasking they liked. Working for multiple bosses and their respective departments (I was an admin for about 50 people and 5 depts for the past 9 years). I can say that I've never really let my bosses down whenever they needed something from me. And thankfully, I do not need to be micromanaged. That was important to them. That I am able to work independently and make decisions on my own.
Figured I'd let you know why they liked me since that's how I landed the interview.

Oh trust me, I didn't expect this at all. I only was applying for jobs that really caught my eye and that I thought I'd be perfect for. I didn't want to waste my money flying up, since I knew I was going to move up in a month or so (when I was first applying). And you're right, we are kind of a dime a dozen. I was very surprised how interested they were considering I was out of state. Then to fly me up? Gawd I hope they loved me. I'd like a job. Like I said, I think my qualifications were exactly what they were looking for. Oh, you know I am counting my lucky stars.
