I applied for my dream job last week, so I made sure my CV and cover letter were top notch. I even rang the owner of the company for a chat (it's a small, growing business) and he said that they were looking for someone like me. It's been a week since I have applied for the job, about six days since it closed officially. Do you think I still have a chance . . . how long does it normally take for an employer to ring and ask for an interview?

Ahh the anticipation is killing me . . . I'm in disillusionment thinking I will definitely get a job interview!

Could be a few hours, few days, few weeks. I've even been contacted a few months after submitting an app. It all depends on how soon they're looking to fill, how many applicants they have, availability to be around to interview, etc etc.

When you're anxious a week can seem like months! Chill out as much as you can and keep looking for other opportunities before you drive yourself completely around the bend.

It took almost a month for my new job (which I started yesterday, woo!) to call me for an interview. Another place called me a couple of months later about a new position.

There are too many factors involved to say "this is how long it takes". That's why it's best to just assume you didn't get the job til you hear back. There's no benefit in obsessing over it, they'll call you when they call you.

I hate to say it, they may never call. (I hope I am wrong and they do.) Keep applying until you get calls for interviews.

You can't possibly think they are going to pick you out of 300 applications or resumes.

Well contacting the right manager or recruiter would boost the odds though.

Every time i have been called for a interview after applying was always within 2 weeks. Now the government job I have now contacted me 8 weeks after I applied but I don't think that is the norm just that it takes longer with a government job.

Thanks! Is it a good idea to call and ask how the applications are going? I find that it's probably not much point if they have already decided who to interview. You would think that if they want you to work for their company, they would make prompt contact.

Never indulge in assumptions. Rather than call I would be more inclined to send a brief email re-introducing yourself and saying that you're very interested in the position and hope that your application will lead to an opportunity to interview.
