This is what I think. I'm a hiring manager in technology. I have to do my own recruiting too. Unless someone's address was something pornographic, I could care less which domain it came from. Some people use one email address and that's what they use. I'm not going to sit around and ponder whether they use one or have some other email account popping their hotmail, or any other thing.

I really thought people had better things to do. Sometimes it's no surprise why there is a supposed skills gap in some fields. The qualified candidates probably get disqualified for some totally superficial criteria long before the "skills" are even checked.

You will be surprised how people will disqualify an individual over petty things. Employers are really taking advantage of their upper hand in this economy

I'm surprised it's a topic too, it never crossed my mind until my MIL pointed it out. She was an HR professional for decades, so I try to listen to her advice on the subject, but that was before e-mail was even used (she retired 20 years ago), so I didn't know what to think.

Like I said, I teach ESL, so while I will occasionally use the internet at work, it's not a cool job, LOL.

I started paying for my hotmail email service a while back, I think it was to enable receiving large files and archive those emails as well. maybe thats why you see less folks using them

gmail didn't allow (4letters)@gmail.com and that's the only reason I kept all my business or professional emails on hotmail - it was just easier to remember and type if I had to tell someone what my email was. But for resumes I would be creating a new gmail account with my full name. I don't think it matters otherwise even for business matters.

A normal e-mail address that comes with your paid internet access: myname@comcast.com, myname@verizon.net, etc. I only use a freebie e-mail address for online shopping and website memberships. I let the spam go there, and use my real e-mail address for real e-mail.

Trouble with that is that if you ever change providers, you can't take your email address with you.
I think your "real" email address should be one that you own, and that will only change when you want it to.

When I see a "__@cablecompany.net" type email address, my first thought is that the person is tech illiterate.
