I know it probably isn't ideal, but is it ever acceptable to wear sneakers on a job interview?

I have one soon, but don't have a pair of shoes, and I can't find a pair that fits anywhere. The problem is I have extra wide (4E width) feet. Stores like DSW, Famous Footwear, and Shoe Dept all have "wide width" shoes, but those aren't wide enough. I remember looking a couple years ago, also without luck. I don't know, maybe I don't have feet meant for shoes.

For some reason, finding 4E width sneakers at the same stores is a lot easier and has never been a big problem.

I can't remember the last time I had to wear shoes; I've never needed anything but sneakers (even in my current job).

For all I know, maybe sneakers are passable attire in the position I'm going for (office) but want to make the most of the interview.

I guess it would depend on what type of job it is. I'd avoid trying to explain the shoes, though, unless you're asked about them specifically, which I doubt would happen. If that's all you have to wear, then so be it. They cannot (and should not) discount your ambition and skills just because you're unable to find dress shoes in your size.

For most office jobs it wouldn't be considered appropriate footwear.

You may have to catalog order off the internet. Do a search for wide width shoes. Something should come up. It probably won't help you for your current interview due to the time factor. Shoes may or may not fit, may have to be sent back . But once you find a supplier who has what you need, then you can get a pair for work.

What size shoe are you? Have you tried looking online?

Never. Order off Amazon or something like that in your size. With the internet there is no reason you can't get a pair of shoes to fit correctly for interviews.

It can if you are say walking to work. I know for me, walking in dress shoes isn't easy and you wont always have the luxury of time to sitdown and change shoes. I have a similar size issue and Zappos or a local independent shoe place maybe your best bet. I got dress shoes in say 2005/6 from an independent shoe seller and they are STILL in good condition. FYI, I am 4E too.

For the most part, the sneakers depend on the job. If it's low-end retail (walmart, k-mart, target) or fast food, they'll likely not look at them.

Yeah, get some proper shoes. I can understand it's difficult to find a pair but you should at the least have a proper pair of loafers to get through situations where sneakers are inappropriate, such as in an office. If you want to put forth your best effort for this job interview, then sneakers are not the answer.

But first you have to get the job. Wearing sneakers to work is one thing once you have the job...but going on a job interview. Take the time to change into dress shoes.

Fast food? Sure. Anything in an office? No. Most any on-line retailer will overnight them.
