It seems these questions are happening very early in my last few phone interviews.
It seems to go against all information on discussing $ at the face-to-face.
Try to put it off or say "work within this range" don't seem to work very well.
So it's like get ruled out by being too high or under value one self to maybe get in?
And why do they ask about who else you are talking to? Seems odd to me.
Tips on how to handle better or is this just common practice now?

yep.definitely recruiters. Nosy bast****. Wow. Be diplomatic give them a range. don't give them specifics about the other companies that are interviewing you. Why? So they can call the company and get a lead? Or try to push another candidate there as well? Just be general - "well known F500 in ___sector" or whatever.

I have always hated recruiters. they're like used car salesmen.

recruiters are worse than car salesmen, worse than ambulance chasers. theyre like those people that would steal your teeth before the vultures could finish you off
