I drove 200 miles one way 3 times to land the job that I just got. Once was to take the exam for the position (I had to be there at 8 AM so we left our house around 2:30 AM. We ended up driving back that same day as well so it was a pretty long day ), once for the interview, and once for paperwork/fingerprints. Not once did asking for reimbursement even cross my mind and I'd do it all again in a heartbeat.

Depends on if the salary for the job could cover basic living costs along with the travel costs.

I've driven 5 hours (SF to Eureka) for an interview, also 1-3 hours away for a few others... ended up getting a job that was 90 miles from where I lived at the time, after THREE trips down there for interviews. I took the job and relocated, then found an even better job closer to where I moved about 18 months later.

So for me, yes it was absolutely worth the drive - and no, I didn't even think to ask for reimbursement. Pretty sure you can claim those expenses on your taxes, but I didn't bother. Your situation may be different than mine was (i.e. can you relocate if you're hired?), though, so only you know if it's worth the trouble.

P.S. I actually did commute that 90 miles for almost two months, and it wasn't THAT bad... I work later hours, so traffic wasn't much of an issue, and I'm the type who enjoys driving. But when you factor that 3+ hours in addition to a 9-hour work day, it did get old pretty quickly!

If it was a job I wanted? Yes.

I am driving back 1k miles for personal and biz. I understand it's much tougher when starting out but it's the cost of doing biz........aka job hunting, etc. As a result of my investment I have the first SV co considering me with relo package.

Only you can decide if the investment is worth it. It's all about risk vs. reward or cost/benefit analysis.
