For example, assuming that it's a tech position.

The position requires very strong skills in X.
I have average at best skills in X. I'm afraid that during the interview full of technical questions, I will be in over my head and end up doing horribly. Do you still go through with the interview and hope for lady luck?
I'm going to decide tonight on whether to cancel it or not.

What skill is X? Is it something you can read about overnight and be comfortable talking about tomorrow? Is it something you can teach yourself pretty quickly? Most phone interviews are not very technical, they don't go into too much details, but again depends on the company and job I guess. I don't think you need to cancel, what do you have to lose? if you don't know the answer to a specific question, just say you are not familiar with it. The phone interview will give you the opportunity to learn more about what they are looking for and after the phone interview, you will get a better sense on whether or not your skills will match with the profile they want and decide from there whether you want to pursue it further or not.

I go through with the interview, but prepare for it and never hope for "lady luck". You never know what they are expecting. Their version of "expert" may be your version of "average".

I sure hope I'm not too late.

If you have an interview, they've already decided you're a potential "go".

So, read up, suck in the ol' gut, put the shoulders back, hold head high and go for it!

Best of luck to you!

do companies put you on the permanent blacklist if you "waste their time"?

No. You applied, they reviewed your résumé and determined that you're worth a deeper look.

Why not? If they don't think you know what you are doing that will be that and they will drop you from the possible list. No one is going to be mad.

It's one thing to lack a skill, and quite another to make a subjective judgement about your proficiency in skills you do have. What they consider "very strong" may really be closer to what you consider average. Or they may want someone with very strong skills but not be able to afford them, and will settle for something less than that.

Give it a go.

Give it a go. You never know, they might be thinking of going in another direction with the role after talking to you. It has happened to me. In fact it is happening now. I applied for a job that had a host of technical skills listed I didn't have.

I did the phone screen, and the recruiter apparently thought I was OK. I talked to the hiring manager, and told him I wasn't skilled in those areas. He mentioned that those technical skills could come from another department, and it isn't critical.

I have survived a few rounds of interviews, and the next up is the CEO. The person in the position now is actually much more technical than I am, but it looks like the company is willing to overlook if the rest is a match!
