I was recently emailed a invitation to be interviewed tomorrow on short notice. She asked me what department I would like to work in. I originally applied for a cashier job because that was the only one available. I'd rather be a sales associate, so which department would be best for me to apply to. Also could anyone give any advice about the interview and the questions that will be asked. I really want and need this job.

The holiday season is quickly coming on and someone quit or (gasp!) gave notice.

...so which department would be best for me to (ask for).
Ideally... the one where you actually know something about the products.

If you do a good job they might even keep you on after the holidays.
Good luck.

Best advice? Run away, run away as quickly as possible.

I would say that you would prefer sales associates in (insert department you know best here) but that you would also do well as a cashier. Keep it open and use it to your advantage to show that you are a team player and would be willing to do both. I would imagine that Best Buy wants their folks cross trained around the store so (I could be wrong and am totally making assumptions BTW) if you keep your options open then it looks better for you and is good for them because they have a flexible job candidate.

As to the interview, be your best self. Just answer the questions to the best of your ability. Also, a quick tip, It's always better to take a quick moment to gather your thoughts after being asked a question instead of saying "uhhhh." I'm completely guilty of this and have to try really hard to remember NOT to do it.

Good Luck and I hope you get the position you want!

If you're a male, wear a shirt and tie if you have one. Don't dismiss it, you'd be surprised how much appearances can sway an interviewers opinion of you.

A cashier position will be more routine while the floor sales associate will be able to mingle more with customers. All depends on what you feel more comfortable doing. Keep in mind, customers will pull all sorts of questions out of the air and expect you to know the answers. Granted you can always find the answer out for them, but sometimes dealing with customers on the floor, especially with the holidays approaching, can be very stressful. All depends on your strengths and weaknesses.

Good luck.

I am in sales so I have a bias, but I say sales, cashier is dead end. My old SM no joke started at BB went to mngt and then worked up to SM at F500.

I you like to talk with people, good listener, want to make more money, and compete go for sales. Yes I know this is BB not SV, but same principles apply.

And as mentioned wear suit and time. I interviewed in SV hipster capital and the HM said I am impressed you showed up in a suit.

It's cheesy but you have to start somewhere. Learn to sell the pen watch on youtube.

I had an offer to work in one of their departments. What got me hired was my knowledge about what I was going to be selling. So, your best bet would be whatever department has things that you're knowledgeable about. Though, that's not even an absolute necessity, because I found that a lot of employees weren't really familiar with what they were selling before getting hired. Questions were all situational as expected. For example, tell me about a time when ______ happened? So, either try to have some stuff in mind beforehand or make a few things up and memorize them. Other than that, just try to be relaxed. Not much to it really.
