Thank you, RDH35! I definitely understand how hard it must be for you moving all around. I knew a lot of military spouses that were beside themselves--some had PhD's and were working at the Navy Exchanges as cashiers or baggers.
I posted this in the general forum to get a national idea--places to live--in hopes of getting a bigger perspective outside of Florida, especially since we are considering the possibility of moving out of state.
We did find a town in Missouri that fits the basic drive to stuff. The town we're looking at has schools, banks, shopping, parks, libraries, hospitals all within a short drive, and it's about an hour from St. Louis. Many people are telling me that it's bad for jobs, but considering where we live now, I'd have more opportunities for even low wage work as well as the possibility to commute for better paying jobs.
Here, I'm not sure about the childcare situation or even school situation. If I have a long commute when the kids are in school, that poses a bit of a challenge with respect to extended-day options. I had some potential job prospects in a neighboring county (I didn't get the jobs anyway), but I started thinking about the child care situation and driving: would I have to backtrack to my kids' school in this county, then drive back in that direction?? That would turn my 45 minute commute into an hour and a half commute!!
I like the area I live in, but the driving and planning of the communities makes getting anywhere difficult!! I'll admit, I live in an even more remote, rural area than most, but even the "towns" or "cities" are kind of scattered in terms of services. I find I could be driving any number of directions for childcare, Etc.
I do the Google Maps thing to zoom in on towns to find places with stuff centrally located, and all over Florida there is either City (higher costs), rural (way to far to get anywhere) or suburban sprawl (rural area in disguise but slightly closer to humanity--still higher costs).
