They say that 80% of communication is non verbal. The trouble I am facing is I can't tell what they are thinking for sure when someone is talking to me. I can only guess based on their facial expressions and body language.
While my posting name is "I'm retired now" I want to be unretired so I can go back to being a working member of society. When I am not on City-Data I am working hard on my job hunting.
I have had quite a few interviews in the last few months but I get the impression that the people who talk to me are not taking me seriously. They are smirking at me and I see them thinking, "who is this old fool and why am I wasting my time talking to him."
Do you ever get the impression the person interviewing you is smirking at you and if so what do you do?
If someone smirks, proceed as normal. You can't control what they do, only what you do. Your sensational threads sound like the person who posted "unemployed job candidates don't show they are being productive while jobless" thread awhile back.
Hmmm... I don't know about smirking, but I ALWAYS worry about potential employers taking me seriously. I have a super feminine voice so I worry about sounding like a bimbo.
Also, I think I've posted about this before, but I've had interviewers lecture me about how college graduates are horrible, entitled, jerks. I never knew what to say in those situations.
Anyway, I really wish you luck on your job search and hope that future interviewers are always respectful. I think anyone who genuinely wants to be a working member of society should at least be given a chance to prove their work ethic, regardless of age or generation.
I have found trying to read and profile interviewers is as logically baseless and ridiculous as them profiling the interviewee. I just show up, put on my best show, and wash my hands of it. If they call with an offer I am pleasantly surprised if not I am already working on the next one.
even though most employers or hiring managers say they dont age discriminate, well guess what...its the 21st century and they sure as hell do. body language is a monumental, especially in interviews. hell, some professions and knowledge is best learned from an older generation, some not so much. the higher tech a company is, the unlikely they are at higher an older fella, but it depends on your skill set and what jobs you are applying for.
So, what was your career in? what type of jobs are you interviewing for?
