So I had a "phone screen" I guess you can call it that. Anyway the person asked me "How old I was?"

EDIT: I also had another company today ask me "Are you married?" AND "Do you have kids?"

Seems to be a common thing.

Are you a minor?

Does the job have a minimum age requirement?

Otherwise, yes.

I believe they can ask you your age, they just can't discriminate due to age. Its not illegal to ask.

Lol, no. I'm in my late 20's. I think I know why the person asked...this individual sounded young as well perhaps mid 20's or earlier 30's and holds manager position and I would be working directly under them. Perhaps they felt threatened/concerned?

It's not illegal to ask questions in an interview - even awkward ones. They just can't use it against you. Most employment lawyers and HR departments years ago advised interviewers against asking that question directly, for fear that it might spark a frivolous lawsuit, but that's just legal advice, not an illegal question. A better way to ask those questions is to ask things like "Are you over the age of 18?" "When did you graduate from college?"

Again, it IS illegal to ask "How old are you?" BEFORE one is hired.

That's the tricky part. You don't really know whether or not it's being used against you. You can only hope not.

They can ask anything they want. There's nothing illegal about asking those questions. However, companies avoid asking these questions (to the point of having policies against it) as it opens them up to discrimination claims.

You guys have no idea what you're talking about.

There are MANY types of illegal questions interviewers are NOT allowed to ask.
