I'm starting a 4.5-month contract job that's 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday - Friday, and located in the middle of nowhere. During that time I need to be lining up another job. But how can I?
Most people do a combination of calling in sick, taking vacation days/partial vacation days or personal time off, or schedule fake doctor's appointments.
Several years ago, I had a 6 month contract gig where they were cool enough to understand that around the 4 month mark, I was going to be going on the occasional interview. It's possible your workplace might be willing to work with you - for example, if you had a 9 am interview one day, they might be willing to let you stay late to make up the hours.

^That's a great suggestion. My department has a lot of consultants so we know when their contract is up that they will need to schedule interviews. We do just that--they can make up hours by either staying late or coming in on weekends.
OP, many companies are also understanding about scheduling interviews and are very willing to conduct phone interviews. If you can't take time off or make up hours, see if the company you interview with is willing to do a phone interview.

Did you get a programming gig, or is it still warehouse work?
8-5 means you're getting an hour for lunch.. use that hour for an interview.. just explain ahead of time to the person doing the interview that you will be on your lunch hour.. They are generally quite understanding.
If you're working on a contract that is known to not be renewed.. They'll generally be a little lenient for the lunch hour that runs an extra 15 minutes here and there as well, so long as you're honest with them.
If it's a temporary gig, then I'd be totally open with them that you'll be interviewing elsewhere since you'll need another job lined up after your contract is over.
