Whats up with this? On the first rejection phone call I asked why and they said my skills were great, I was great but they just "found a better fit." The guy went on to rave about my resume and skills and that he told his colleague from another department about me because he was hiring and looking for someone and that he is already expecting a call from me.
1.5 weeks later I get a phone call from the same guy that rejected me and he mumbles something about "having a new budget in their office" and that they can now, in fact hire me and would like to give me the job.
Whats up with this? Has anyone ever been denied a job and then offered it? Why would they do this? It doesn't make sense, on the first phone call it was a "fit" issue and now it's a "budget" issue?
yep, fell through with the #1 candidate, you are #2 but #1 got disqualified so just take it.....if it was me though I would always be worried that in the back of my mind my manager would always think of me as the "#2" guy and nothing would ever be good enough for him.
Congrats on getting the offer, agree with all other posts, their #1 candidate for some reason did not work out, don't dwell on it, if you like the job and the company, put this behind you. Many years ago, I referred someone to my company and my boss was not very impressed. After two other people that we got through recruiters turned the job down, he came to me, ****-faced and was mumbling "Well, A and B rejected the offer, so can we go back to your guy?" At that point, the boss was so desperate that I did not even have to fight for my guy to get more money (this is what I usually do for the people I refer to my department), he gave him 25% increase, and my guy is still here making 2 times as much.
Why do you care? Haven't you ever heard the saying that no one can take away what is meant for you? Thank God and move on with your life. There are plenty of people who wish they were in your shoes right now.

This is exactly what happened to me back in July, except the time between being "rejected" and being offered the job was something like 2 or 3 days.
Needless to say, I took the job and that's where I'm at now.
I don't know and I don't care why they rejected me initially and then changed their mind two days later. I never asked and they never told. I was just happy to be offered the job. I wouldn't obsess over this if I were you. Just say yes.
In my experience, they tend not to tell the people who "didn't get it" until the offer has not been accepted/decline/pulled. Weird
