I'm not trying to say that testing is technically bad. I took a civil service test in one city and I thought it was a pretty good test. The only bad part is residents received some more points. Had I been a resident I would have been interviewed much faster. If not then you are on a list. Still worth it though.

Having said that though I've seen testing of 25-30 people and testing of nearly 80 people. Eventually you see what the more professional tests look like.

There is a key point for these jobs. While it is true there are potentially hundreds applying, in my field there might only be a dozen or less that are actually qualified and competitive. A lot of people believe the myths about civil service jobs and apply. But they aren't qualified. So the actual competition is much less.

I know this is an old post but I applied and was accepted to take a State Exam back in 2013 (CT). As I was standing in line for the exam, one of the state workers was talking to an individual up in front of me. The State worker explained we were the second wave of 900 "test takers" for approx. 27 job openings = State jobs here in CT are extremely competitive.
