I'm a college student (expecting to graduate this spring) who has applied to various jobs across the nation. I followed up and I got two interview offers - a phone interview with one employer and a Skype interview with another employer.
Since I'm an out of state candidate, are the phone and Skype interviews replacing the face to face interview? Or are those interviews as a prescreening technique?
Are out of state candidates required to go in to do a face to face interview?
Agreed. The phone and skype interviews are probably the step before an in person interview. It would be very unusual for either of these to completely replace an in person interview, and most, perhaps all, employers will want an in person interview before making a final hiring decision, even if you are out of state.
It's more of a pre-screening but is a good chance for you to show them your stuff without having to make the investment/hassle to travel wherever they are for the time being. Treat it like an in person interview. Make sure you have a solid internet connection with skype as it is quite demanding on bandwidth. I've had an interview on skype where the employer had terrible internet and man it was the most awkward interview ever. We ended up using the "chat" option instead lmfao.
Most of the time it's just a quick check of your background and ability to communicate. If they like you, they'll schedule a face to face. I've got one coming up in a couple days.
Also be prepared to possibly have to do several phone interviews before they want an in person interview. I had to do 3 phone interviews (HR Recruiter, Hiring Manager, and a Senior VP) before they decided to fly me out for an in person interview
