I'm currently working in the middle of nowhere, a 3-hr drive from the big cities in my state. Which means that if I need to interview in the city, it's a whole-day ordeal. My contract ends in June and I've already started applying for other jobs (in case my contract isn't extended) and I've got an interview arranged for next Tuesday. So I'll be taking next Tuesday off. Now, if I get another interview, that'll be another day I have to take off work; and if I get another interview after that, I'll have to take a 3rd day off work. That's the best-case scenario. If it takes interviewing at 5 different places for me to get a another job, that could be 15 days off work --- impossible!

So how is it logistically possible for me to get another job lined up?

Possible, it may suck up vacation time and personal days. It's all about priorities.

If your contract ends soon it might be worth it to just take your chances and call in sick on all those days. The risk you run by asking for vacation days and / or personal days is that if they say no you can't call in then and go to your interview.

Honesty might be the best answer. Tell your current employer that you are in the market assuming the contract will not be extended. Similarly, tell the hiring manager that you prefer to be interviewed either early mornings or towards end of day so you only have to take a half day off instead of a full day from your current job. Any rational manager would understand and accomodate.

Except that he's leaving out that he's only been there about a month, and a week ago he was still onboarding/training....
