Hello all, I'll try to make this short so I don't bore people!

I currently am a Food, Beverage, & Sustainability Buyer for all bars and restaurants at a Pennsylvania Casino. Everyday I always keep my eye out for other opportunities and even relocation chances. Last month I applied for a similar position with Busch Gardens in Tampa. It potentially pays up to $10K more per year then current job now. Job Submissions closed on 5/12 and I was quite surprised that yesterday they called and left a voicemail to me to request an interview.

I got back to them and they said since I'm out-of-state they'd like to setup a phone interview first... a conference call between me, 2 members of their HR team, and the head of their culinary dept. which I'd assume I would report to. They basically told me that they'd like to chat over the phone first and ask me some basic questions and if things go well they'll fly me down to meet face-to-face and we'll go from there.

I'm pretty excited for the chance... I know many places are iffy with bringing in out-of-staters since it's usually a long process. Think this is potentially a real good sign for me? I feel that unless I completely bomb the over-the-phone interview that my chances are real good that they'd like for me to come down... and the best part is it's on their coin which is another shock!

I have done some interviewing and having two or three phone 'screening interviews' has been common, before you are brought in on a face to face. Especially if you are out of state.

Brush up on the company and be prepared to answer why you are interested in them and what don't you like about your current job.

They're gonna weed out the wannabes by phone and will most likely have the select few fly down & interview....that's if they don't have any good local candidates.

A panel interview by phone?

That seems a tad scary.

Put your best interview suit on even if they can't see ya.

You'll feel confident anyway.....

Thanks for the reply guys...

Oil dog: The HR rep I chatted with was very kind and even said that since I'm out of state they'd like to talk to me first over the phone so it's not a waste of my time and essentially their dollars to bring me in. I've already prepared researching relevant things within their company to try and give myself the best knowledge possible before the interview. I want nothing more to show them I'm serious about them.. and about moving.

YAZ: Yeah the panel interview is a first for me but I can understand since they'd ideally like to bring me in but it seems they want to play it safe before forking over the dollars to fly me in. I just need to make sure I'm as prepared as possible. I'm guessing they ideally would rather do a "screening" with an HR rep and then if they felt I was worthy I'd get the next interview with the department head. So I think my "screening" is with HR and dept. head to probably get a sense of how I sound, and if I have the proper knowledge of the position and to see if I'm truly a worth candidate to fly down.

I did notice late last week the dept. head even lurked my LinkedIn profile so I'll take that as another positive that he probably liked what he saw on there too, hehe.

Thanks guys!

^^^Yes. Phone screens AND searching social media is a big part of the process now. I see the profiles of companies/people I talk to lurking on LinkedIn. So take down the spring break photos and/or set up a separate business account.

That's cool that your reputation proceeds you with that interwebby profile thing.

The Tampa area is nice, but I'm more of a Key West kinda guy.

Good luck & keep us posted!

I've had a few oppurtunities to move to Tampa in the past and was just too afraid of the move... actually had a job offer out of college to work for the Rays but it was a risky job and I was afraid to take it.

As for the Bucs logo... I could dig it.. LOL.. I'm a New York Sports guy but I've got nothing against Tampa, all great teams down there! hehe... one main thing I love.. a huge Penn State Alumni following... last time I was down there my buddy took us to a Penn State viewing party with the Tampa PSU chapter and it was wonderful.

There'll be plenty of Rangers' fans down there for sure.

Just think...ifya get the job.....SPRING TRAINING

That was one of the bonuses that this Michigander didn't think about until after I lived here (AZ), for a few months.
