I'm still young, traditional college age, but I need a job badly. It really doesn't matter where or if it's part-time or full-time. As a first time job seeker, how do I go about my search? Do I search online all day to see if places like Wal-Mart, Target or a grocery stores is hiring? Do I drive around everywhere and walk into these places and ask if they are hiring? Is it OK if I call around to local Wal-Marts and Grocery stores and ask if they are hiring?

I am not familiar with the process for those stores. I would search on the internet or go to the site and look for careers. That should direct you on how they want you to apply.
Have you thought of being a waiter or waitress? I think when in college that is a good job that is flexible around school schedule and you can make pretty good money. Some will hire even without experience or you could start as a bus person.

If your aiming for the retail/fast food type work. Going in person is not uncommon though most of the time you will be told to apply online or at the kiosk on the side. What I would do in addition to applying online and before going in person to the store is call them up first. Apply for the job on Monday and call them up that Monday or Tuesday.

Go on Yelp and look up the restaurants and retail stores owned by local small business owners. Call them up and ask if they are hiring.

You aren't competing with 100 applicants for a job at McDonald's, since most entry level applicants apply online and don't consider working for local businesses.

When you apply in person, wear dark slacks and a buttoned shirt. Avoid casual dress such as jeans, t-shirts, athletic clothing, etc.

I work in retail and we had a bad night and the store manager reminded us there is a line of people at the door ready to replace us so that is pretty true.

Go to small businesses, and try to get a dishwasher, or warehouse job. You will actually get hours, and wont have to wait two months for a job. Shake the manager, or owners hand firmly, and be reliable.
