I would never tell an interviewer something like that. That's almost begging not to be hired.

You are not telling the interviewer that, that is what you are putting down for a reason on the application

Almost every interview I've been to they push for full details about why you are leaving/left your current/most recent job and often ask what you liked least about it.

Not with job searching. Anytime you talk negatively, or reveal a termination, or have a bad reference the HR HM will assume it is the applicant's fault, often not even give them a chance to explain, and discard their app.

People who get fired for some real cause don't get severance pay or unemployment. So, you were effectively laid off, IMHO.

That's what I was thinking, never heard of someone getting a severance and fired

Based on your post, that is exactly what happened. And it remains true even if you were the only person they let go. It is a straightforward answer. And they will accept it because it happens very often in the current economic climate. Just don't say anything negative about the place or your former coworkers or supervisor.
