With everything in the news about data mining, social engineering, etc, it makes me very very nervous to have my LinkedIn profile public or post my resume on Monster, etc.

However, a good friend of mine got an unprovoked interview request for a new job because her LinkedIn profile was public. She got the job, and she is much happier.

The flip side of that is, I don't want to deal with calls from recruiters who are trying to get bodies into jobs I have no interest in.

What's your take?

My opinion on Linked-In is there is little downside to getting your profile out there. The company I work for strongly encourages it as it helps promote the company and showcase the expertise of our employees. I've made good contacts on Linked-in with professionals in other fields and got useful advise on projects I was working on in the groups.

The only time I have rejected contacts is with staffing agency people and one time I got this foreigner repeatedly sending weird messages so I kicked him out.

I agree that there is very little downside. You can post your general career details as if it is a resume, but you can leave out personal info such as your phone number, home address, birth date, etc. They can contact you through LinkedIn. You don't want your personal contact info out there, especially your number, unless you are willing to take some occasional (maybe even frequent) unwanted calls.

I have a spam-bait yahoo email I give to businesses and put on Linked-in. I save my good email for trusted sources.
