you should definitely negotiate; as other people have said, it's really normal to do so. and you are at the point in the process when you have the most power. they want to be done with the hiring process. you can make that happen by saying "yes".
keep in mind though, your argument can't just be "i wanted a raise from my current job". you have to make the case that a higher wage is fair market value for your work. it has to be about your value to the company, not what you want. see if you can find comparable wages, and if the new job is any way a step up in responsibility, etc from your current one, you can certainly use that as a comparison. and if it's really exactly the same, well, then it's totally fair to ask for the same salary or even a slightly higher one because of the more expensive benefits.
@convextech I am single and on my own. A paycut is out of the question, unless I have no other choice, of course.
I was at a career fair where a working, single mother was looking for work as well since she had to commute 1.5 hours each way and hasn't gotten a single raise in years. The time was the bigger factor for her, as she hasn't really spent any time with her son in the longest time.
At least know that you're far from alone, and the fact that you were extended an offer (even though it wasn't at the rate you were seeking) still speaks favorably for the long run.
I got a call from the HR rep today. She wants me to come back for a "mini interview" with a different supervisor for a different position. She says it pays what I am already making. I will go and see what they are talking about. I guess they really want me!! LOL

Only a fool or somebody with problems leaves a job for another only to make the same salary and benefits that aren't as good compared to job you're leaving. The only way to have salary increases is to move from job to job. I don't care what anybody says. Job hopping= raise in $. People work for money. People don't work for free. Slavery is has been over, at least in this part of the world. I wouldn't worry about "HR etiquette" of never discussing salary. HR is not your friend. YOU are your friend. So negotiate.
