Ok, I had a successful phone interview on Monday. The HR person told me that the hiring manager would be reaching out to me the next day. He didn't. I happen to know that this position needs to be filled quickly. In a major corporation, is the hiring manager required to call the person for the second interview? He may not like me based on my age (50), my ethnicity (mex-american), etc. I know that they can't LEGALLY discriminate on those factors, but I'm sure that they do anyway.

No, the hiring manager is not legally bound to call, but generally what happens is, if the recruiter/hr person likes the person, they will recommend the hiring manager contact them for an interview.

How long ago was this? If the hiring manager was going to call yesterday, it's possible he wasn't in or just didn't find time to call you. If it was last week, have you called the hr person to follow up and ask when you might expect this call?

The HR person probably tells every candidate that the hiring manager will be in touch. Have you tried following up with either of them?

another reason why people dislike HR and proof that they are fully incompetent in their job and as decent people

When a stranger on a forum guesses about what might have happened, it doesn't really give people another reason to do anything.

am i suppose to respond? my point was the inevitable wait that HR puts you thru makes them unlikable people. How many times do people call HR only to catch them on a lunch break or random break and get back to you like they dont remember who you are? sorry, no, HR people are the bane of whats wrong with the hiring process

Did you go from hiring manager not calling on in ONE day to racial AND age discrimination?

In my experience, all communication with a candidate is either via HR or a recruiter. The hiring manager doesn't call the candidate directly, unless a phone interview has been scheduled (by HR/recruiter).

If HR didn't give you a specific timeframe or even a specific time that the hiring manager would call, and it's only been 1-2 days, my advice would be to chill out. Sounds like HR is doing the initial pre-screen, and the hiring manager may be waiting until s/he has 5-6 good candidates before scheduling further interviews.
