I recently was hired at a YMCA for child care, but I think I have to pay the 27.50 for my background check? Does this seem normal to anyone? Thoughts?

That doesn't sound normal to me, but I wouldn't let that dissuade me from taking the job if I was otherwise interested. It's cheesy to ask you to cough up 30 bucks, but it would be at least as foolish to refuse.

Maybe they have a high turnover of employees? Or maybe too many fail the background checks? You could ask HR if they could reimburse after you are hired. Should be a reasonable request.

Teachers in most public schools have to pay for their initial background check. So no, it doesn't seem weird to me.
