Bad advice.

I work in tech, a suit is an advertisement that you're probably from New York, and don't know what you're talking about. Or worse, you're from DC, know a lot of tech, but have only implemented it for bureaucratic government contractors with outdated corporate cultures.

Be yourself. For me, that's slacks, not especially shiny shoes, a button down shirt w/no tie...maybe a sport jacket. But if I was a little younger and a software engineer, would have to re-think.

If you're interviewing with me, I really don't give a **** what you wear. Except if you have a golf shirt with elastic waist band khakis. That's only appropriate if it's Casual Friday at the Department of Agriculture, and you know that most of your co-workers would make Homer Simpson look like a GQ Cover model.

The last time I had an interview they called me when I was at the library in my work-out clothes. T-shirt, shorts, tennis shoes. They tried to tell me to come the way I was dressed, but why would I do that? I told them I'd be right over after I changed. I went home and put on a nice suit and tie. Why not? I got the job.

I wouldn't overthink this issue. Dress well. No one will fault you for it.

Defiantly depends on the company but my rule of thumb is to always dress one level above the actual employees that work there because they are judging you from not only your qualifications and skills but also the way you dress too and coming to the interview in professional attire is a major plus. If the job allows you to wear street clothes, the interview attire should be business casual (button up shirt with khakis or black dress pants. Tie is optional) if the company employee dress code is business casual (dress button ups shirt with Khakis or black dress pants with a tie. Blazer jacket or suit optional). For executive busniess, attorney, CEO, director positions a suit and tie is certainly required. In my job as a chemist and my current company the dress code is business casual and I showed up at the interview with a tie, dress shirt, dress pants, and dress shoes. I have an interview next week and even though the company dress code is business casual, I am wearing a suit and tie. I believe it's better to be overdressed than underdressed.
