Basic pay, E-1, 0 years of service = $1,531 a month
Housing allowance, E-1 = $511 a month
Food allowance, E-1 = $357 a month
Housing and meals are tax free, so if you estimate taxes at 20%, (511+357)/.8 = 1085
1085+1531 = 2616, * 12 = 31,392.
You don't get housing and food in cash. You get it "in kind", which is a room in the barracks for free and 3 squares a day for free. If you get married or are authorized to live off post or mess separately, you get it in cash. Civilian jobs don't usually do that. You may not like the room or the meals, but they are still free, and still a room, and still meals.
That's why people get confused about military compensation, and the married servicemember who gets a free house with free utilities mistakenly gets upset about how little money he makes.
