So the past 5 years I have been working at a retail store where I basically had issue with my manager ever since the manager started working 3 years ago. My manager truly hates me, has an attitude, look down on people, and basically the worst person ever. I did report my manager to corporate numerous years ago so they know the issues before we had, but obviously they still are on her side it feels like.

Anyhow, working at retail there will always be some customers who file complaint on me to corporate and the message gets forwarded to district managers and then to store manager. So I've been reported couple of times by customers for being rude, talking too much, etc. which isn't true and customer is always right nonsense.

The problem is that I will apply soon to professional job once finishing college, and I did put down on my resume the current retail store I work at, and the place. What if this professional company randomly calls the store and ask about me as a reference? Can they do that? Obviously the manager hates me and may tell them that I am horrible even though they don't see all the good I do (being nr 3 opening store credit cards etc).

I once gave my managers name as a reference to a tutoring place, they called and was told that according to company policy they may not give out any info about any employees. What if they call corporate and ask for permission to ask how I am?

If asked for reference, should I put my current managers phone even though they are not allowed to give out any infomation unless they call corp.? I'm scared if my boss will say bad stuff about me.

Onviously corporate know I had done both good and bad thing to the company... (Bad thing being customer complain and short in cash register, good thing opening lots of credit cards).

Please give advice

PS! I may leave my current retail job in few weeks but the place I applied already has my resume and it shows I still currently work there. The new job I am applying for is NOT retail.

Assuming you don't have an opportunity lined up upon graduation, "break the chain' by temping or working in a capacity wherre customer contact is not a factor, If you're in normal physical condition, a job in warehousing or distribution comes immediately to mind.

Most customers loves me, but there are always few once in a while who files complains if they don't get there way - typical retail. My boss hates me.

No more retail for me after college... Other places I worked they all loved me.
