Well, I started a job recently at a F500 company and not long after starting the job I was contacted by 5 or 6 recruiters. I have agreed to interview tomorrow for a job that I want to make my career, my current position is not career worthy for me. I am excited for the opportunity and will look to advance.

Here's the question:

Current pay, I work on an hourly basis and make around 100k/yr with bonuses, it is a lot of hours, 12 hour days living on-site away from civilization. The money is good for the work, however, the lifestyle is not great.

The salary position I held before this one, and a similar position to the opportunity I will be interviewing for tomorrow paid around 50k/yr.

What range should I consider for the new job? I understand the two are drastically different and I am prepared to take a large pay cut in order to have a 9-5 job again with a routine and a life. During the interview I will not throw out a number, I will explain the above to the VP and simply state that I am prepared to accept a competitive salary. There are also no salaries posted online for the company.

Thanks.

When prospective employers ask about my salary, I always state: "what's the range for your best qualified candidate?"

I agree, let them bring it up. Lets say that you toss a figure out there. A couple things could happen. One they could figure that they are getting you for a bargain. Two, they could figure that maybe you don't belong because others there are worth more and you mentioned a low number.

Since you are making the $100K now I would call that the new you and let it ride. They don't care what your lifestyle is they only care about what you are making now. What you may want and what they may be willing to offer are two differant things. Your negotiating chip is that you can now command a six figure income. Go with that. Play that card.
