So I got an EMAIL from HR for a position within their company that requires AT LEAST 4-5 years experience. I only have 1 year of experience that is just closely related to the job title, and then 6 of loosely related experience. I'm thinking they might not have read my resume closely enough or something. They aren't head hunters. I just don't want to wast my time and have them realize that I am not qualified once I show up.

Take the interview, if they like you they can overlook the experience.

Nothing like confidence going into the interview...

If you want the opportunity, stop the negative self-talk, and show that you know what you're doing. Regardless of experience.

Unless the hiring manager/HR department at this company is utterly incompetent, they apparently think you're qualified enough for this position if they invited you in for an interview.

Attend the interview and see where it goes. The worst that can happen is they reject you...

Go, because if nothing else, interviews like this are good practice interviews.

And depending on your field, it may be one of those situations where they are only calling unqualified people and then saying they can't find Americans to fill the position and they need to use HB1's.

But I hope I'm wrong and you're just underestimating your skills.

The position might be exactly as advertised, or alternatively they may have a different job in mind. If you have nothing better to do, you might as well check it out.

Or I've had several instances where I went to an interview where I knew it was a long shot and it was clear from the beginning they never had any intention of hiring me. I was aparently there to either give them practice interviewing or fulfilling a corporate policy like minimum number of interviews for a position.

Always do the interview. Several times I've interviewed for positions, it went no where, but they called me back for other better fits because I was an overall good candidate.

Also, the years experience, like all a job description, is a wish list.

Sometimes HR is bad about wording their ads as well. They could just want you to have 5 years of professional world experience, some of which being in your field. If you described your duties in the former role clearly then they should have read it.
