What I don't understand is all the false negative generalizations about our state. As far as I know, most states pay a pathetically small amount for jury duty, it as viewed as your civil obligation for being a US citizen; one that you should be grateful to do (but many people aren't, mostly because of the lousy pay), and if you have a nice employer, they will pay you for the day(s) you are absent anyway. Unfortunately OP is not employed.
Scooby, I don't know if you took my response the wrong way or not, but what I was trying to say was that Tx. courts should be more forgiving and more understanding if an unemployed person has a job interview. That's all. I think all courts in all states should.

They do pay but not very much.. I had to sit through a trial about a yr ago... I wasnt selected, but I got paid 6.00... Thats not even minimum wage!! lol
True, worst part is I went to jury duty and I was only there for a few minutes and they told us it was cancelled.
Still couldnt risk it... Hopefully another job opportunity comes up!
I hope so too, it was rather crappy but it seems like many companies don't like jury duty. There was a thread about a month or two where the OP was encouraged to skip it for a meeting.

You couldn't give them the bill for gas? 6.00 doesn't even fill two gallons of gas or bus fare back and forth to the courthouse.
I would have went to the interview since that leads to me continuing to eat and paying bills
I can only assume you haven't read the thread very well and particularly missed this which demonstrates that there are (as has been pointed out several times) penalties for failure to appear:

my friend skipped out twice and just got a subpoena for Nov. I don't know if they're going to just lecture her and give her another summons to appear for jury or just fine her. We're in New York. They don't play. They used to be very lax in NY but not anymore because people skip out. You didn't know ahead of time when you had to appear for jury? They usually send you the notice weeks ahead of time. Any employer who has problems with jury duty before they even hire you, is going to have problems with it after. They don't want to reschedule an interview because of something legitimate as jury service? That's very sad. They're unyielding and uncompromising. They can fine you up to a $1,000. They can also revoke your driver's license. If it's a federal court I think the penalties are stiffer.I'm speaking for NY, but I presume other states are similar. There are other ways of getting out of it once you're there in that jury pool waiting to be called into trial. Ditching them just p***es them off more and when they finally get you, they REALLY give it to you.
It's not worth it to get into this much trouble for some potential interview for some employer who "seems like a good fit." You really don't know that. The fact that they didn't want to reschedule an interview around jury duty already tells me they're not.
