I guess I got so used to doing phone interviews and then going to the office to do in person interviews.

Absolutely. Particularly for management roles.

I've actually never had a phone interview, I've always been interviewed in person. Likewise, when I was the interviewer, I always called people in. To me speaking on the phone is completely different than speaking face to face, and I prefer being in front of someone to get a better "vibe", if that makes sense.

I have been hired from a phone interview. Most jobs are a phone screen followed by an in-person. Some jobs are just in-person.

But I am sure, what profession it is also plays a role.

Always. I did a phone interview once in 2010, a person was in Europe on vacation, all the rest have been in person.

I never call people for phone interviews. If a person applies and the resume and cover letter interest me, I invite them for an in person interview.

For us, phone interviews are reserved for those candidates that we know are unable to make an in-person visit. We want them in front of us so we can evaluate the whole not a voice or scratchy skype picture.

We don't do phone interviews for entry level positions. It is up to the hiring manager if they want to do them for management positions. I think they are a given for executive level positions.

My employer has never asked me to hire anyone I have not met in person. If we talk to someone on the phone it is to screen, then invite to an interview.
