I've taken a 1.5 hiatus from work. I'm doing some volunteering including becoming a scout leader for a troop. Is this something I can include on my resume or is it completely ridiculous? Just wondering how to account for my 1.5 year gap. I work in higher education.

I know a lot of full-time people who are also Scout leaders after hours, in their spare time. So while you are free to put it down on your resume, it won't account for the gap.

Why did you take a "hiatus"?

Being a scout leader doesn't cover a gap in employment. You can list it under volunteer/community service activities if you want to. To answer your question, yes, it would look completely ridiculous to try and cover a 1.5 year period of unemployment by sayting you were a scout leader.

lol... that's what i figured.

and to the poster who asked why i took a hiatus, we moved states, took some time off to help kids settle and we weren't sure if we'd be staying here long term, etc. our housing costs are also taken care of through work so didn't feel an urgency to find a job right away.

nothing wrong with listing community service stuff but don't act like you should get a hiring bonus over it.i have known some scouts that get really annoyed when you don't take their service seriously.

ABSOLUTELY put down on your resume that you are a Scout Leader!! Becoming a Scout Master, shows that you have proven true leadership qualities; and second, you helped these young men with gaining confidence and grow as a person.

I don't list anything on my resume other than jobs and contact information.

It would count against you if I were reviewing your resume. Supporting an organization that openly discriminates is not a value that think beneficial in a workplace.

I am assuming Boy Scouts. Girl Scouts is a different story.

The girl scouts don't discriminate like the boy scouts do but those cookies are a huge scam. did you know the troop only gets 25 cents for every box they sell? The rest goes to corporate to line their pockets.
