I'm in the Chicago area and my kids had to take Spanish in grade school, almost twenty years ago.

What I'm reading into your post is 'they should learn our language', but that's not something that can be forced on people.

In many other countries, English is taught as a second language. We're not even doing a good job of teaching English to the people born here, let alone teaching them a second language with the depth allowing them to actually use it. Shame on us.

I don't like it. People who move here should learn our language, not the other way around.

This assumes that the job will only deal with people who live "here."

Exactly. I don't mean you should supplant English with Spanish or Chinese but I can't count how many times it would have been very helpful for me to be fluent in French when dealing with Canadian customers.

My pigeon Spanish has served me well in social situations.

What is our language? Should we be speaking "Cherokee" or "Bering Straight Land Bridge People" language because they were here first?

The first permanent settlement in the USA was founded by Spanish people in St. Augustine, Florida.

The main issue I have is that an employer can ask for WHATEVER he or she wants for a skill set.
Railing against it will do no good.

Better get used to it. English speaking Americans will be in the minority in the next 15-20 years. This country is changing, and not for the better.

These are service level and retail jobs and the need is consistent with changing demographics. Most of these jobs are filled by Spanish speaking people anyway. You wont see the CEO of a Fortune 500 speaking Spanish.

For example if you go to a luxury goods place, 20 years ago they always had Japanese speaking staff. Today in line with changing wealth and travel demographics you would probably find Chinese speaking staff.

Its not necessary to be bilingual if you have high dollar skills but it would help. If you have no skills and compete with Hispanic immigrants for a job then you better learn a few words. Frankly, even if you spoke Spanish I would rather hire the native Spanish speaking person due to better work ethic.

To complain about it is nonsense. Either you have the mental capacity and will to learn something or you are a loser and just complain and complain when the real problem is rooted in racism toward people who are different or toward immigrants. Deal with it. Too bad.

It's a shameful thing for sure. I would love to see what the French would do if they were forced to speak Spanish in order to get a job!

It's quite insulting really.

P.s. I'm in Florida, so I deal with this crap first hand! I REFUSE to speak "Spanish" in those circumstances.
