Thanks.
Guess we will see...

Really hope I get it.

I will keep you all updated...

Do you think, though, I should call HR or email the editor for a timeline? Not that it would help, but...

I would wait until after Christmas or New Year's. Lots going on at companies this time of year - people out on vacation or PTO (or sick), end-of-year projects wrapping up, etc. I know it's a big urgent deal to you, but this could be item L on their A-Z list.

You should have done that when you spoke to them. Do you have any questions? "What is the timeline you are looking to fill the position, and when can I expect to hear back from you?". Very important to ask. This way you aren't mulling over when am I supposed to hear from them?

Most people say not to contact, it makes you look desperate.

My personal experience has been positive. One position that strung me along (similar to yours) didn't call when they were supposed to. I waited a couple of days and called to follow up. Didn't get the job.

Another one I followed up on a regular basis and finally got the offer. This one took five months or so.

Oh gosh...

Now I REALLY have no clue what to do...

The thing is, HR only spoke to me ONCE, at the initial phone screen. Since then, every step has been with the actual editor/potential boss.

Should I email him? The timeline he gave me for hiring someone was, again, early December... it's now Dec. 17 and my references were contacted 5 days ago....

Argh!

Yes. You can e-mail him. I did that about 2 months into the process as a simple inquiry for an update.
Just don't appear to be impatient, as that is never a good sign.

And what happened when you emailed?

Or should I wait until tomorrow? Their office hours are Sunday-Thursday.

I got a reply stating that my file was still being processed, and that I should hear back within a certain amount of time. Basically confirmation that things were being worked on.
