I am currently employed in Chicago in journalism and have been applying for an editor role in NYC since October. The position was posted in September, I applied in October, and after multiple phone interviews and a Skype interview, as well as an edit/writing test before Thanksgiving, the editor at the place I'm applying for asked me for references. A week later, he emailed me asking if I had other references that weren't professors. I emailed him four more good references, both work colleagues and former supervisors. Five references total, and they all told me the editor called them Friday, four days ago. These are very good references, he even knows one of them, and they all told me their calls went well.
So now, I am waiting and it's agony. This has been, admittedly, a very slow interview process. But what do you all think? Does a reference check this late in the game mean I'll be getting an offer? What's taking so long?
I'm trying not to stress myself out waiting, but dang, it's eating me up.
It's only Tuesday. You can't say "four days ago" when it was more like "two business days ago".
They're probably busy. This is the most important thing to you but I'm sure you can understand that it's not the most important thing to them. It sounds like you'll be getting an offer - so try and be patient and think about other things.
You will probably get an offer as it sounds like everything went well. You're in a similar position that I was in it seems. I applied in October for a job that posted in September. Things sped up after the phone interview though, with the next week an in person interview (in a different state). I got an email saying they would be making an offer early this week from late last week and i'm still waiting. I'm wondering what's taking so long myself. This is so familiar. Just know there are others in your similar position.
Huh? I mean... one of my references he knows! And I am very qualified...
Anyone else have anything to contribute?
You had the same response I had. HUH?
You wouldn't have gotten this far if you weren't being seriously considered.
Also, the delay is sometimes with HR as they put together the paperwork and offer, and depending on the size of the company, they may be doing this for one person or many.
I predict you'll hear something within the next day or two, but my crystal ball is sometimes on the fritz.
Thank you, MPowering. Really, really hoping for a Hanukah miracle tomorrow/Thursday!
But you really think I will get an offer? I mean, I've come this far and had five very, very good references.

Close this thread down - nailed it.
