Here is my situation. I am looking for a new position now. Whenever I fill out an application, they ask for references. I have no problem with references. I have several people I know will provide me a good reference. The only thing is, I like to use my references sparingly. If I go to a headhunter and they want to check my references right away, or go on an interview and they want my references right away, I worry about my references getting several calls, and nothing coming of it. And by then, my references are annoyed. Do you think it is reasonable to say to a recruiter or in an interview, "If you contact me that you are very interested in moving forward with me, I will provide you the references. I just don't want to bother my references for no reason?" I think most companies don't check references until the very end of the process anyway.
