Interesting thread. I'm getting ready to do interviews on Thursday for an entry/mid-level position with our company. Panel interview, and it's a position in my division.

We have 4 candidates at this point, and based on college graduation years, none of them are younger than I am, being 30.

This was an issue early on when I moved into the Manager's position since I have two existing employees who are 25+/- years older than me, but it's worked out over time.

The only advantage I have is that this position will be reporting to one of my senior level employees who is nearing retirement age, so it won't be a direct report immediately.

OP didn't say that the interviewer is the hiring manager... 'I'm interviewing for the same role that he's in."
If you're starting a second career, I think it makes sense that your peers will likely be younger than you are.

I am a manager and some members of my team are 10-15 years old than I am.... It doesn't bother either of us. One of my employees even admitted to me once that he would never want the responsiblities that I have in my role and that he was happy in what he was doing. If it's a person in a position that seems undeserved/ unwarranted, that's one thing, but if the person is qualified and high performing, then age shouldn't be a factor.

Suck it up if you want/need the job. Ego is both a blessing and a curse...

That what things have come to for my team as well. When you're managing people that started with the company the same year you were born, it creates initial tension (especially since I was supervised by this employee when I started), but eventually people realize that it's less about the age and more about the respect and happiness in what they're doing.

I think the same applies for interviews; if the person shows you the appropriate respect, age shouldn't be an issue.
