I had lunch paid for in my second interview. That's about it.
Travel expenses is not common in general job positions. If the candidate they are looking for requires a unique set of skills, like Liam Nielson, then they might pay.
My clients pay mileage, hotel, food, flights for senior positions including spouse; generally Skype interviews determine which final candidates are selected for face to face.
If they are deliberately doing a national search, that will usually include travel expenses. But that is almost exclusively for high level positions. If a job is advertised as a local position, you may get an interview even if you are out of town, but you will most likely have to pay your own way.
Things have definitely tightened up over the years though. About 15-20 years ago, I had an interview with a company that wasn't that far from where I lived, but it was a good 90 minute drive, maybe even a bit longer with traffic. They wanted me there at 8 am for a full day's slate of appointments and without my asking (or honestly, even thinking about asking!), they made arrangements for me to stay at a local hotel the night before, so there was no issue with being there in the morning. That was a mid-level role, not upper management, so it was definitely a surprise. My guess is that if the same circumstances occurred right now, that hotel stay would not be offered.
I had 3 out of state interviews while looking (for local-to-me jobs) and all three paid for air or train fare and provided transportation to/from airport. I could ask for reimbursement on meals, cab but why? It's not a lot and yes, you can write off on taxes though I think you can only deduct 1/2 of meal costs. You can deduct mileage to/from interviews, airport for interviews, parking, cabs, etc.
I would not front the costs to interview across country or anything that requires mass transportation, hotel, etc.
Also, just a side note but the 1st time I ever got flown out, I thought for sure I had the job in the bag. I was meeting the head of HR and the President, why would they waste this $$$ on me and have me meet these important folks, esp. since I had already interviewed with 4 different people. Well, quite a wake up call to find out they flew out quite a few people (which stretches out the process immensely since not everyone can go the same weeks) Honestly, I didn't realize how common this was, but apparently it is. Especially with remote/WFH jobs where HQ is located ofttimes in other states.
