So here is my scenario. I have two conditional job offers, both in the midwest. Both are conditional on credit and criminal background checks. I do have an impropriety from nine years ago that could be an issue.

Could I accept both conditional offers and then four or five days from now, when I've made up my mind or one of them rescinds their job offer, I can decline one of the job offers. How would you folks suggest approaching this situation?

Accept both, if neither one rescinds, you pick which you like better and tell the other that you had a better offer come in and thank them for their time.

Accept both, that way you will have a plan B in case one of it doesn't work out (could happen for n number of reasons). In the field that i work, it is extremely common for an employer/recruiter to come back to me and say that the position I was offered yesterday has been cancelled/on hold due to lack of funding or whatever the reason it is, so I always make sure i have 2 job offers in hand and still give interviews until the day I join one of the jobs. In today's world, its not very difficult for the firm that you declined the offer to find another job seeker, agreed there is some kind of loss for them in terms of time taken to interview you and to finish background verification. However, keep in mind that at the end of the day you need to prioritize your needs versus theirs, so go figure.

I have never been denied employment based on my credit and criminal background even when both were not so good

I've done it and leveraged them against each other for higher pay went with the job that offered me the most pay and benefits and it worked out quite nicely. Actually worked for the one company for a bit until the other position opened up as well.

I agree with this, accept them both and pick the one you want. You may even get them to raise the pay or offer a signing bonus if you play them against each other.
