I normally wouldn't even consider this, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought it would be okay.

I interviewed for a position about six weeks ago. He was suppose to let me know for sure either way by the end of the week. I never got a call.

Anyway, I had previously found him on LinkedIn.

Is it appropriate to send a connection request on LinkedIn? I thought, should the position open up again, it might help keep me in the conversation.

Any thoughts?

Sure, why not. Especially if you really like the company and want to work there eventually. It's always good to have connections on the inside.

I had a guy that turned me down for a job then request to be a connection on LinkedIn. I wasn't sure why, but I accepted and haven't talked to him again.

Sure you can do it, but don't be disappointed if he does not want to accept you. Everyone has their own opinion about how to use linkedin.

Personally I ignore all Linked-in requests unless I know / worked with a person before. And I wouldn't consider a 1 hour interview knowing them. I question the value of a resource to advance my career when I do not know the people in my network. It's not like I'm going to recommend someone for a position I don't know.

Why would you spend time on such a low percentage play? Why not use your time and energy on doing things that will lead to better than 2% chance of getting a job?

You are asking the wrong question. This isn't about whether it's appropriate or not, but rather how effective it is.

I'd never initiate it, but if they requested me, I'd accept.

I did this once, when the hiring manager and I seemed to develop a rapport even though the meeting did not result in an offer. He accepted the invitation and I think we both improved our network.

Bottom line, worst that can happen is they decline the invitation. As a hiring manager myself, I'd consider accepting such an invitation based on the individual involved. You can always drop the connection and even block them if a problem develops.

You would make the recruiter look better to other people because he has been accepted by you. Don't accept unless doing so makes you look better, which it does not.

OP

I was thinking ahead. The interviewer personally hires for the position (a director level position) I was applying, and he manages 17 other locations that all have the same position. My thought was that by keeping my face and information in front of him, it may help my chances should I apply for the position in one of the other locations if a spot opens up.
