I've been looking through resumes of some potential candidates fresh out of college. I have noticed that they still cram everything into 1 page.

My favorite candidate, also one of the ones I forwarded to HR, had a resume that had great contents but horrendous format due to aiming to cram everything to 1 page. Had almost no page margins...

Why do colleges still teach people to cram everything into 1 page?

I don't know if it is colleges so much as HR "experts" who post such nonsense in on-line articles and blogs.

I agree that you shouldn't cram everything onto one page in that two or more page resumes are not uncommon. I actually had a three page resume for awhile and had no problems.

That said - the length should match the amount of experience. So I'd wonder if the issue with these new college grads isn't the formatting, but the ability to be concise?

But bottom line - it's not the length of the resume, but how effective it is in conveying your qualifications to the hiring manager.

Why did you not point the shortcoming out to the candidate and forwarded an updated resume?

Not my place to tell them what to do with their resumes. My team needs a couple people. What I do is I look through resumes and forward the candidates I like and let the process take over.

Better question should be: why does a fresh college grad need anything other than a one page resume?

It bugs me to no end seeing a 2 page resume and the second page only has a line or two of text. If its at least a half a page or more, then its ok by me.

If they get rid of the bullcrap summary section, thats even better.

Well, how much contents or how specific the candidate chooses to put into his/her resume is entirely up to him/her. I actually don't mind that some are super specific and they need more room to explain their skills. Someone in their colleges need to tell them that if they want to put more in their resumes that it is ok to go beyond 1 page.

The girl who's my favorite candidate so far crammed so much into her 1 page resume that all the words on the outer edges were up against the edges of the paper. And there were no spaces between the paragraphs. Actually, I almost skipped over it because it was hard to read. But I stuck with it and found that I really liked what I saw.
