I started a temp to perm job last Thursday but that same day I was offered a permanent job with a different company, which I interviewed last week. Both are for the same salary. The commutes are about the same. The temp to perm can go perm in 3 months. In the temp job I found out on my first day, the previous person was fired because the hiring manager said he was not smart enough for the role, a slow learner, and had a faulty memory. He was fired the day before I started. Ouch. Another manager bad mouthed the former employee as well. The hiring manager seems really friendly otherwise, but odviously he doesn't care or understand HR policy.

The perm job the problem is that I am an accountant who has worked in larger departments. I was one of two or more accountants. This one I would be the only one reporting to the CFO. There are 2 support people reporting to the CFO. There is a need to develop the accounting department to another level which I have not had the experience. For example, they need new processes set up which I have never done. They are also behind in a few areas. The hiring manager seems nice though. She seems very business like. But I feel any issues in the department will head my way. A CFO doesn't have time to develop employees.

As you can see, both positions are not perfect. Should I just stay in the contract position and keep looking or just take the perm gig? If I already had a perm job, I would have passed on both because both are gambles. What do others think?

Perm job if you think you can do what is expected of you and if it's what you want to be doing. You mention that you never set up an acct department before. But CAN you do this? Do you have the ability to understand what is necessary and then implement the plan? If you really have no clue on what to do there, then you likely will be very stressed out and will fail. If you have confidence that you know enough to get the job done, then take it. Last thing you want is to accept a job where you are in over your head.

If you feel that you will fail at the perm job or that it's not something you want to do, then keep the current job.
