So I was given a salary range during an interview. For future reference, what's the best way to negotiate if I desire the upper spectrum of the range and the initial offer is on the lower end?

If you don't come into the negotiations already making a salary in the upper end of the range you will have a tough sell on your hands. They know what you make and know what you can get by on. HR Managers are smart people that are skilled in the art of negotiating. They know exactly what it will take to get you on board. If you are a recent college graduate it will be even tougher to negotiate unless you have a very specific skill set that they need.

If you feel like you need more to take the job then put together a proposal on why you need more. Are there benefits (better health insurance, tuition reimbursement, etc) at your current position that you will not get at the new one? If so, use those to negotiate. If you currently are on a bonus plan make sure you mention that as well. Otherwise, you will have a tough time.
