I understand the suspicion many people have about the assignment test, but take a moment to think about this differently and you will see that it makes no sense.

It takes a significant amount of time and money to post jobs, schedule interviews, and do the interview. Many who interview will not complete the assignment, will do a terrible job, or come up with a plan that is unrealistic because it does not work well with company resources.

Then the manager needs to review all of those mini-projects.

It is simply not an effective use of company time and resources to fish for project help in this manner

Don't do the assignment if you think it is too onerous or you don't want the job, but it would be a stupid, inefficient company that tried to get free work in this manner. .

I had a programming assignment for a company and I'm glad they assigned it because I couldn't do it. The assignment didn't have anything to do with the company though so they wouldn't have made any money off of it.

Thanks for all the answers.
On one hand, the assignment doesn't seem like something they could directly use in their business, mainly because it comes with data not from their industry.
On the other hand, even though during the interview we agreed on one assignment/task, the hiring manager later decided to send me two more. And he called me the next day during work to ask how I'm doing solving it and if I have any difficulties.
In the end I decided to decline and sent a very polite email - I don't think I would have enjoyed his management style in the long run
