Just tell them no thanks, that you can't afford to work for only 37K.

If it makes you feel any better I get lowball offers worse than that frequently mainly from staffing agencies which is why I don't talk to them anymore.

I'm just surprised because it's a huge nearly fortune 100 company, not a staffing agency or anything and they made it sound like I was the crazy one not taking benefits into account in their calculations.

I'm just really glad I didn't fly over there on my own dime for any interviewers. I did lose about 6 hours of my life in phone and Skype interviews (not to mention the prep for the interviews). I even asked them once in an interview if my salary requirements were in line with the position and they said yes, of course.

I'm an admin assistant and make more than that in salary alone. My benefits are also excellent. I can't believe that some employers believe that everyone is so desperate for a job that they will take any offer that is extended to them.

I would turn them down now even if they offer you the additional 25k. That's a huge red flag that it's a bad place to work. Example: come annual review time, you're likely to get the "sorry but you're already at the top of your salary range so we can't give you a raise" BS.

Ok, somewhat crazy update. I just got a call from a different HR rep and they began by apologizing profusely and then said the other rep made a mistake and the actual offer is 57k. She kept apologizing and saying how embarrassing it is. So now I'm wondering if it really was a rep making a mistake and then adding all the fluff about the extra benefits equaling the 60s on her own, or if they are just offering me more money.

I'd like to think it's just one bad HR rep. Otherwise I don't think they'd get the authorization to offer an additional 20k so quickly. They still didn't meet my "in the 60s" number, but this offer is much closer.

It is vaguely plausible that the other HR person misread a 5 as a 3.

i've seen it happen as a hiring manger. HR gets overwhelmed and sometimes even has read the wrong offer to the wrong applicant - and if the person was new they were probably just trying to say whatever to get you to accept.

I agree though that it was likely an oversight as an extra 20k doesn't just happen in mere minutes.

If it's a good offer for you financially; its still very close to the 60 that you wanted and you should consider taking it
