Normally I'll make the decision right after the last interview, make the offer the next day and let all of the others know as soon as the offer is accepted and the references have been checked, never more than about a week.
I had an interview for an Analytical Chemist position at a large pharmaceutical company out of state that I applied to back in early September. 2 weeks after I applied I got notified to set up a phone screening. We talked about my past experience, do I mind relocating, asked those typical behavioral/personality questions blah blah. 2 weeks after the phone screening HR called to say they wanted to fly me in September 30 for a 6 hour on site interview and I took two days off for the interview. I met with 12 different people in the interview panel of various ranks and all the questions they asked were nearly all behavioral questions and hardly any technical questions which was odd. During the lunch with two of the chemist I asked how long does it take for them to make a decision? They replied that it took about 6 to 8 weeks respectively before they was given a formal offer letter after the onsite interview. About two weeks after my onsite interview HR calls me to follow up with how the interview went and to give me a status update that they are still interviewing candidates and hopefully will make a decision soon. It has been 4 weeks after the interview and I am wondering if they will inform me of whether or not I have been selected or passed on for the position. At the initial phone screening they did tell me they had over 120 applicants and the position was still accepting applicants so there are a lot of people who applied for this position which would explain why it is taking a long time and why they are being super picky. I am currently employed making okay money right now but this position is my target industry that I was aiming for when I graduated college a year ago. I don't mind waiting but I really hope they inform me of whether or not I have been selected for position. The thing I hate the most is when companies I interview with refuse to send a rejection letter after someone else has accepted an offer. I had to use two PTOs to go to this interview so I would like to know if I have been rejected or not for the position just out of respect for my time.

It's going to be okay. Keep applying and you will eventually get lucky and get a job offer. The good news is that you are still getting interviews so there is nothing wrong with your resume. You just have to do a better job selling yourself and showing them the you are the "right fit" for their company. It's seems like all companies are so focused on right fit these days and if you don't know anyone that works at that company it can be hard to tell what they are looking for to show them you are a perfect fit for the job. I hope you find something before your unemployment runs out. I wish you the best in your job search.

I understand that you would like to know, but most companies/organizations don't care about you or your time.

Yes the economy is healthier than it was post 2008 but there is a lot of competition for good paying jobs paying 60k a year or better. You can get 15-30k job easy in this economy but anything that pays more than that is still challenging to obtain. In my profession people are fighting for temp to hire science jobs that pay $15-20 a hour in my area. The economy is better but professional jobs that pay good money are still tough to obtain but who I am to say I only have one year of professional experience in my field so individuals with several years of experience have no problem finding great paying jobs.

I've found that if a company is interested they will usually get back to you fairly quickly. The key is that it means NOTHING! until you get a real offer letter that you have signed and sent back. No news means no. Now I will say it is rather rude of a company to not send in a form letter to people they've brought in for interviews. Heck even with automated systems they can send a response once the hiring manager toggles the "job filled" switch or the "job cancelled" switch.

I suspect there's legal consequences if you sign a letter and they reply "LOL just kidding" a week later when you've put in your two weeks and the such.

Also -- it seems after the second or third interview, they're just toying with you. Maybe if you're making north of 250k a year and have several people reporting to you ... but your ordinary line worker pulling 25-50k or your ordinary office shlub making 50-120k ... you get a feel if the guy's a complete jerk or isn't quite up to snuff technically after a phone screen and an in-person. Not sure why you need 4+ rounds of interviews.

Government sometimes has legal hurdles to overcome, although I got a job offer @ NOAA headquarters a day after I interviewed them -- and was told it'd take a week or more.
