That might work for some things, but the question I proposed for an IT person wouldn't be considered sensitive unless the employee had been working at government job in IT security. If I asked that question to check a reference and got an answer like that, I would find the whole thing strange and wonder why the candidate used this person as a reference who couldn't answer simple questions.

Getting real references is pretty easy. You really shouldn't have to go through any sort of fake mission. People you worked with at any job. People you know professionally in a related field. A vendor who you worked with. Just to name a few. And from that you select the people who can understand the work you've done, know how to speak about it to highlight your strengths and who can know something about the job you are applying for.

In the day and age of fake mailing address services which are actually a po box not surprised they exist and are used. People lie about car insurance using their parents address and policy to offset their traffic violations and lower insurance.

Too many try minimize lying on resumes, applications etc. They outed more than one manager/administrator for lying about their credentials. It's the casualness that is the most disturbing because that means people have done it or will do it. Politicians do it for people trying to get lower profile jobs in government all the time using jobs for leverage/favors.

That being said yes I get it's embarrassing have to ask friends for references especially when they have solid job and/or careers. But I've done it. I even answered security clearance referrals for friends who got jobs in nuke plants. Several times actually because they expire. No biggie. Tell the truth.

The OP is right to look for a job right away. Which is a mistake I see too many do NOT do especially the last few years deciding to ride these enhanced unemployment benefits. Be honest with friends, warn them. If nothing else one will find out who they're true friends are. This is also more incentive to work on resume anyway possible. Always take advantage of tution benefit programs, tried to get certified or licensed in what ever-it's not all about degrees. Also if one only has to 2 instead of 3 dependable reference use what one actually has. Sometimes honesty will carry some weight or time to find another.

You mean look right away as in 2016 when the OP first asked the question?

Right away for the OP and anyone else who has recently found themselves unemployed. Still relevant. Especially lying on job applications and resumes. Estimated up to 1/3 of applicants lied on their resume.

https://www.valuepenguin.com/news/on...ities%20(40%25).

This makes it's tougher for an applicant with a less impressive but valid resume with the relevant skill and experience.

Employers often now search the web to get a clue about their potential employees.
Probably a username like "texasusa" is not going to tip off any employers. His or her secret is likely safe. LOL

I'm going to guess that's not the case, because of prospective employee A gives company C a fake reference, it isn't like company C enters the faker into a fake database and this alerts all other companies.

After being in the work force for many years, references are kind of meaningless. Anyone who pays attention to this can collect good references along the way in their career and I'm not talking about from former supervisors either. So when a prospective employee gives a reference, they expect them to say great things about them.
Agreed.

A comment like the one you responded to was reminiscent of the "permanent record" my third grade teacher threatened us over. If you chew gum in class, that's going on your Permanent Record and you'll never get a job!

Personal references can be faked and I've done it. I just had another coworker pretend to be my manager and they can't verify, but I don't see why you would want to do it in your situation. Its much harder to fake working for a company though because that will be verified by calling HR directly.

You say you have people that you could use as a reference but you don't want to bother them? I'd say it's better to bother them and have some real references than conjure up fake ones. Everyone understands that you need references, so I'd bet they won't mind (ask them first of course), and offer to reciprocate if needed.

OTOH, if you have no one that can give you a good reference from past jobs or personal references, then I could see going this route and faking it. If it's between the street and lying to get a job..... But I'm talking real desperation here. Maybe you had a bad experience at your last job(s), crappy managers or co-workers, whatever the reason, and now you find yourself without anyone who will give you a positive reference. It happens. Sometimes you need to fake it til you make it. But KNOW the very real risk you are taking about being found out. That could be humiliating at the very least, or you could lose a great job if they find out later. Be assured they would fire you if they do.

Fact: Sometimes life requires extreme risks. Not pleasant, but there it is. Proceed with caution.

I thought to myself, what was better being unemployed and broke, or faking it and making some money?
I’m guessing it was awhile ago? Today they don’t have to call you, they send the reference a questionnaire to fill out online. Last time it was texted to me. I had to list three areas where I felt the person needed to improve! What a line that was to walk. Because it’s automated today I think most places check them. I’ve never had a job without my references being checked.

Having fake references isn't much different than companies selling products paying people to give good testimonials about their products on ads. That is pretty much a business SOP. Nearly every tv radio or even internet ads now has some actor saying this marginal product changed their life.
