So I interviewed with a firm a couple weeks ago. I didn't hear from them until yesterday. I had really lost interest even the ugh anything would be better than my current job. I called the recruiter back this morning left a message and then I got a email request to complete a survey about my experience followed by a rejection email and voicemail. I don't know about you but if as company isn't interested I do not want to waste time chatting on the phone about it. Just send the canned email, don't get my hopes up by leaving happy sounding voicemails and just move on.... I don't like the new trend of employer calling candidates to follow up to say "we went with someone else"
Thing is, you could have also asked
"What was it that I lacked?"
"Do you see other openings coming soon?"
"Is there another similar position that you may interview for?"
Oh and try getting a rejection nine months later..Now that one made me laugh.
I think it's rude to leave candidates hanging. Whichever method they choose -- letter, email, phone, or even a text -- they should notify candidates in a timely manner.
I'd rather get a terse "Sorry, we're hired someone else" text than nothing.
I'm a big girl. I can accept "NO." Silence drives me crazy, though.
If the choice was between silence vs phone call- then phone call every dam time. That being said I would still prefer email because my hopes go up more if the potential employer is the one calling, still I'd rather have a phone call than the morgue like silence one usually gets when applying for work.
Prospective employers calling back to say "We are moving in another direction" is not a new trend. Taking the time to thank you for considering them and keeping you interested in them for future opportunities later on can go a long way.
