lets imagine you work somewhere, do some good stuff and get some solid experience but were there for only a short while

just how short would it have to be for you to exclude it entirely?

I guess it depends by what "good stuff" means. The reason why you left is also important to me, as well as your tenure at your other previous jobs.

What is "good stuff" in your eyes? how short is short? was it a big name company? why'd you leave?

It all depends on where it falls in your employment history. If it's a job you held for only 6 months, let's say, in between two other jobs that lasted over a year, how will you explain the gap? Can you fudge the start and end dates of the longer-held jobs without being found out? If not, then you could find a different format for your resume where you can include shorter-term jobs in a way that doesn't look as bad.
