So, I'm in the market for a new job and I post my resume on an IT staffing site, and a few other places. I get calls and emails out the you know what for jobs in my field. Sometimes 3-4 different firms recruiting for the same vacancy, W2 or sometimes C2C a few contract 2 hire. Most of the recruiters are Indian.
What gets me is they all have "urgent" vacancies so I send my rate, they submit me after I sign the r2r form and then I never hear from them again. I ask for follow up and they say "we have not heard from the client" "we are checking on it"..here we are 30 days later, I've submitted probably 10 different positions and no one seems to know anything. Is this normal? What is the deal with these firms? Some of them don't even return my call or email after i inquire. That is extremely unprofessional, I wish I could rate the recruiters and/or their firms!
No reason to get upset, it's common practice these days. You should understand - this market is a jungle and has the carachterisics of a jungle. If you understand that, it will be easier to deal with the job hunt.
The problem starts with employers who became really picky and have insane expectations from potential candidates. Unlike in past years, they don't work with one or two agencies but broadcast the open position to endless agencies. The agencies all hunt for the same position. When your resume was forwarded by one, the others are not even answered by the employer. There is no cortesy like in the past. These are crazy times.
Among the agencies you'll find many that aren't professional and have no idea what specific jobs in high-tech and IT are about. They just parrot buzz words from the list before them.

Don't deal with Indian recruiters, haven't you learned your lesson? Go and apply to jobs directly.
Find a good recruiter. They are worth their weight on gold. Some of the bigger firms will have some good people, but I often have the best luck with smaller boutique type of shops. Best way to NOT get a job is applying directly, in my experience, unless you know someone on the inside.
The Indian recruiters who spam for jobs are indeed a nuisance (though I have worked with a couple of good Indian recruiters).
Legit frustrations. I'd work with two, three max reputable people and network within those firms. Sometimes they have industry specialists within the firm where one person works with healthcare IT and another works with the technology sector.
I'd also be concerned about how you're coming across the desk of a hiring manager from the IT staffing firm. A lot of companies have a policy of how many times or how recently you were submitted.
Small fry Indian recruiters are usually the worst to deal with and try to give the worst rate. I was once offer an job by a agency for 65$ an hour but indian recruiter representing the exact job was trying to offer 40$ an hour -_-.
Firms that have legit sites, pictures of the people that may be representing you, or at least list their recruiters are usually not as scammy. There really is a low barrier for entry for recruiting in general, the big fish recruiter outsource to smaller recruiters whom do not have direct access to the client. Avoid those.

I actually just met with a recruiter today and I can't stand them. He actually had the audacity to inform me what I described on my resume is not a true Executive Assistant. I don't know what he is talking about. He believes only EAs are if you speak to clients in-depth regarding their deals at the Company. I said no Senior or JR EAs do that as we could be fined by the gov't. I speak to clients I just am not allowed to discuss their deals as I am not licensed. I don't know what he is talking about.
My industry is heavily used by recruiters. However, in the past I have been lucky by finding my positions without them. Its been hard work but is possible.
I am also working with a different recruiter who is amazing. He does not BS me or send me jobs I am not looking for. I am actually waiting to hear back from him to see if his client is interested in me coming in for an interview.

I feel your frustration. All of the recruiters I've dealt with have been nice, beautiful girls fresh out of college who have no idea what they're doing or talking about.

I'm having the EXACT same issue. I get 3 to 5 emails from them daily. I've followed up with a few and submitted my info, but nothing has ever materialized. So, nowawdays these emails get trashed. I don't even read them anymore. Probably missing out on some good opportunities, but after a year of going thru this, I no longer have the desire to deal with it.
